Plumbing in Cowbridge
Leaks, Bathrooms & Everyday Repairs
Most of what we do in Cowbridge is the everyday plumbing that keeps a house or a business running, and the variety of property in the town means no two jobs are quite the same.
We’re regularly along the High Street, in homes and in the shops and restaurants that make up the town centre. That might be a call-out for a leak, a tap that’s finally given up, or a blocked waste that’s holding up a kitchen. Commercial premises tend to want it sorted the same day, which is fair enough when it’s stopping them trading.
In the older houses around the town, the work often comes down to what’s behind the plaster. Properties of that age frequently still have some original pipework in place, and in houses converted or extended over the years you’ll find several generations of pipe joined together. That’s worth knowing before anyone starts cutting, which is why we take the time to trace a leak properly rather than opening up the first wall we come to.
Beyond repairs, we fit new boilers, renovate bathrooms, replace cylinders, install outside taps and handle the pipework side of kitchen and extension work.

Boilers & Heating in Cowbridge
Mains Gas & LPG Across The Vale
We install, service and repair boilers throughout Cowbridge and the surrounding villages, on mains gas where it’s available and on LPG where it isn’t.
On the mains side, it’s the work you’d expect, such as replacing boilers that have come to the end of their life, annual servicing to keep warranties valid, and repairs when something fails. We work with Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Viessmann, Baxi and Ideal, and we’ll size the replacement to the property rather than simply matching what was there before, since many older installations were oversized when they went in.
Plenty of the Vale sits off the mains gas network though. For example, head out through Aberthin, along the Five Mile Lane towards Bonvilston, or into the older properties around St Nicholas, and a fair number of homes have never had a gas connection and never will. That usually means LPG, and LPG is not simply natural gas in a tank. Propane runs at 37 millibars against 20 for natural gas, so the boiler needs the correct injectors and settings for the fuel.

Listed Properties & Newer Builds
Two Ends Of The Same Town
Cowbridge has a conservation area and a good number of listed buildings, and they come with restrictions that catch people out when they’re planning a boiler replacement.
The usual sticking point is the flue. It has to terminate a set distance clear of windows, doors, boundaries and openings, and on a listed building you can’t simply put a hole wherever suits. That narrows the options, and sometimes the answer is a vertical flue through the roof or relocating the boiler to a position that works rather than the one it’s always been in. External pipework is the other one, since condensate runs and gas pipework fixed to an elevation may need consent.
At the other end of the town the picture reverses. In newer developments, including the houses opposite Forage Farm and the newer builds around St Nicholas, modern systems tend to be well specified but may need attention in the first year or two while everything settles. For example, pressure dropping, radiators needing proper balancing, or underfloor heating that was never fully commissioned.
Between the two, we cover most property types in the Vale, from period houses in the town centre to new builds on the edge of it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What We Get Asked Most From People Living In Cowbridge
Can any boiler run on LPG?
Not as it comes. Propane runs at 37 millibars against 20 for natural gas, so a boiler needs the correct injectors and settings for the fuel. Most manufacturers offer an LPG version of their boilers, or a conversion kit for an existing unit. A registered engineer must convert and test it properly, rather than simply connecting it.
Why can't an LPG boiler go in a cellar or basement?
The short answer: propane is heavier than air.
Natural gas rises and disperses if it escapes, but propane sinks and collects in the lowest available point. That’s why LPG appliances aren’t permitted below ground level, and why flue terminations must stay clear of drains, gullies, and low-level openings.
Can you replace a boiler in a listed building?
Usually, but it needs planning. The main constraint is the flue, which must terminate at a set distance from windows, doors, and boundaries, and you can’t simply make an opening wherever is convenient on a listed elevation. Sometimes the answer is a vertical flue or moving the boiler. We’d survey before quoting rather than after.
Do you cover the villages outside Cowbridge?
Yes. We cover Aberthin, St Nicholas, Bonvilston and the properties along the Five Mile Lane, as well as Cowbridge itself. Much of that work is off-mains, so it uses LPG rather than natural gas.
