Boilers & Heating in Dinas Powys

One Village, Three Very Different Types of Property

Dinas Powys packs several completely different kinds of housing into a small area, and they don’t want the same things from a heating system.

The large detached houses up Pen-y-Turnpike are a good example. Plenty have three or four bathrooms and a hot water cylinder tucked into a laundry cupboard. Fit a combi in a house like that, and you’ll get a shower that drops to a trickle the moment someone runs a tap downstairs. A 30kW combi delivers somewhere around 12 to 15 litres a minute, and that’s the whole house sharing it. These properties nearly always want a system boiler and a properly sized cylinder instead.

Head down towards the Square and the older part of the village, and the constraints change. Solid walls mean fewer places a flue can legally terminate, because it has to clear windows, doors and boundaries by set distances. We still come across back boilers sitting behind gas fires too, and taking one out is a bigger job than swapping a wall-hung unit, since the old system usually needs flushing and rebalancing once the new boiler goes in.

Then there’s the newer housing up at the top of Murch Road and Cross Common, where the properties are well insulated and a modern combi copes comfortably. Heat loss in a well-built modern house is often under 10kW, so we’re regularly asked to quote a bigger boiler than the property actually needs.

Hot Water & Water Pressure

Getting Enough Flow To The Taps

Most of the hot water problems we’re called to aren’t boiler faults. They’re flow and pressure problems that were baked in when the system was specified.

An unvented cylinder is the usual answer in a house with more than one bathroom, because it runs at mains pressure and feeds several outlets at once. What it needs in return is enough incoming supply. As a rule, you want at least 1.5 bar standing pressure and around 20 litres a minute of flow before an unvented cylinder makes sense, and more if several showers might run together.

That’s worth measuring rather than assuming, particularly on the higher ground around Pen-y-Turnpike where incoming pressure can sit lower than it does further down. It takes a few minutes with a gauge and a flow cup, and it’s the difference between a cylinder that performs and one that disappoints from the day it’s commissioned.

Where the supply genuinely won’t support an unvented system, there are other routes. A vented cylinder with a pump, or an accumulator to store pressure and release it on demand, will both work. We’d rather tell you that before anything is ordered than fit the wrong thing and have you live with it.

Commercial & Landlord Work

Shops, Premises & Rental Properties

Alongside the domestic side, we look after commercial premises in the village, including businesses along Cardiff Road and around the Murch shops.

Commercial gas work has its own requirements, and many general plumbers won’t touch it. We’re qualified for commercial gas boilers up to 50kW, which covers most small business premises around here, and we handle the servicing and safety certification that goes with them.

Dinas Powys also has a steady number of rental properties, given how many people commute into Cardiff from the village. If you’re a landlord, we issue gas safety certificates and can work around tenants to complete them with minimal disruption. Several of the landlords we work for own multiple properties across the Vale, so we keep records straight and book renewals before they lapse.

Frequently Asked Questions

What We Get Asked Most From People Living In Dinas Powys

Do you charge extra to come out to Dinas Powys?

No. Dinas Powys is inside our standard coverage area and we’re there regularly, so there’s no call-out premium for the village. You’ll get the same pricing as anywhere else we cover.

Can you fit a combi boiler in a larger Dinas Powys property?

Sometimes, but it often isn’t the right call. Larger houses with several bathrooms usually need a system boiler and an unvented cylinder to run multiple outlets at decent pressure. We’ll run the calculations and tell you honestly what suits the property, rather than fitting whatever’s cheapest.

How quickly can you get to an emergency in Dinas Powys?

Usually quickly. We’re based just up the road in Cardiff and cover the Vale daily, so for a burst pipe or a total loss of heating, we can often be with you within the hour. Our vans carry stock, so we can sort most emergencies on the first visit.

Do you work on older and listed properties in the village?

Yes. There are a number of period properties around the old village centre, and they need a more careful approach than a modern build. We’re used to working in older houses where pipe runs are awkward and you can’t simply cut where you like.
