Gas Fire Decommissioning & Capping Off
Old Gas Fires Safely Removed
A lot of homeowners want their old gas fire gone, but don’t realise it’s not a job for a handyman. The gas supply needs to be properly isolated, capped at the right point, and the work needs to be done by a Gas Safe engineer who’s qualified for gas fire work. Anything less and you’ll have problems if you ever come to sell the property.
We regularly decommission and cap off gas fires across Cardiff, and it’s a straightforward job when done properly. The gas supply is isolated and capped at the appropriate point, the fire itself is removed if you want it gone, and the opening is left in a state ready for whatever you’re planning next, whether that’s a stove, a new fire, or simply blocking the chimney up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our Gas Fire Service FAQs
Do I have to use a Gas Safe engineer for gas fire work?
Yes. By law, any work on a gas fire, including installation, repair, servicing, and decommissioning, must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer with the right qualifications for gas fire work specifically. We’re fully Gas Safe registered (number 518700) and qualified to carry out the work.
My gas fire won't light. Can it be repaired?
Usually, yes. The most common causes are a faulty thermocouple, a worn ignition unit, or a problem with the pilot light. Most gas fire repairs are straightforward once we’ve diagnosed the issue. We’ll always check whether a repair is realistic or whether replacement is the better call.
Will you remove the fire itself or just disconnect the gas?
Both are possible. Some customers want the fire physically removed and the opening prepared for whatever they’re putting in next. Others just want the gas safely capped off and the fire left in place for now. Tell us what you want, and we’ll handle it.
Do you install replacement gas fires?
Yes. We install new gas fires when customers replace an old one or upgrade. Whether you’ve already chosen the model or you’d like advice on what’ll work with your existing chimney or flue, we can help.
