Troubleshooting Guide: No Heating? Here’s What To Check

No Heating

As experienced plumbers, we’ve seen countless cases where central heating systems simply stop working. Whether you have a gas boiler, a combi system, or a conventional setup, a lack of heating is frustrating, especially in the colder months.

However, before calling a professional (such as ourselves!), there are a few checks you can carry out to potentially resolve the issue yourself.

1. Check Your Thermostat

One of the most common causes of no heating is a thermostat set too low or incorrectly programmed. Therefore, you’ll want to ensure that:

  • The temperature is set above the current room temperature.
  • The heating schedule is correctly programmed.
  • The batteries (if applicable) are not flat.
  • The thermostat is communicating with the boiler.

If you have a wireless thermostat, try resetting it and re-pairing it with the receiver. We’ve found that this is the case with many Hive installations.

2. Ensure The Boiler Is On & Set Correctly

Modern boilers have a digital display that often shows error codes when something is wrong. These errors have made our lives as boiler specialists much easier, as no guesswork is required.

With this in mind, if your boiler isn’t firing up:

  • Check the power supply – has the fuse tripped?
  • Verify that the boiler’s pressure is correct (typically between 1 and 1.5 bar).
  • Reset the boiler using the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Ensure the boiler mode is set to heating and hot water, not just hot water.

3. Check For A Tripped Fuse or Power Cut

If your heating system is completely unresponsive, check your fuse box for a tripped switch (a power cut could also be to blame). If your boiler has lost power, restore it and see if it restarts.

4. Inspect The Boiler Pressure

Low boiler pressure is a frequent cause of heating failure, and if the pressure gauge reads below 1 bar, we recommend the following:

  • Repressurise the system by using the filling loop (refer to your boiler manual).
  • If the pressure keeps dropping, you may have a leak in the system, which requires professional attention.

5. Bleed Your Radiators

Cold radiators or uneven heating may indicate trapped air in the system. To bleed a radiator:

  • Turn off the heating.
  • Use a radiator key to slowly release air from the bleed valve.
  • Once the water starts to come out, close the valve.
  • Check the boiler pressure and top it up if necessary.

6. Check The Programmer & Timer Settings

Sometimes, heating issues stem from the programmer or timer settings being incorrect. If you recently had a power cut, the timer may have reset, therefore, you’ll want to ensure:

  • The heating schedule is correct.
  • The system is set to ‘ON’ rather than ‘AUTO’ or ‘OFF.’

7. Is The Pilot Light On?

For older boilers with a pilot light, check whether it’s gone out. If so, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to relight it. If it keeps going out, this could indicate a faulty thermocouple or gas supply issue.

8. Frozen Condensate Pipe

In freezing temperatures, the condensate pipe (a small plastic pipe leading outside from the boiler) can freeze, causing the boiler to shut down. To resolve this:

  • Pour warm (not boiling) water over the pipe.
  • Reset the boiler after thawing.

9. Check For Error Codes

Most modern boilers display an error code when something is wrong. If you see a code:

  • Refer to your boiler manual to diagnose the issue.
  • Many minor faults can be resolved with a simple reset.
  • If the code indicates a serious fault, call a professional.

If you intend to call our plumbers in Cardiff, ensure you write down this error code and let us know.

10. Check For Gas Supply Issues

If you have a gas boiler, ensure your gas supply is working. If your gas hob or other gas appliances aren’t working, there may be a supply issue that needs to be reported to your gas provider.

When To Call A Professional

If you’ve gone through these checks and your heating is still not working, it’s time to call our qualified heating engineers. Issues such as faulty pumps, broken motorised valves, or wiring faults require expert attention.
