Professional Leak Detection

We Know Where To Look

Water travels along pipework, runs down beams, and can come through a ceiling several metres from the actual source. Therefore, cutting into the first damp patch you see can sometimes make things worse, not better.

At NJ Harkus, we will always diagnose properly before any work begins. That means checking pressure, isolating sections, examining all the likely sources, and only opening up flooring or ceilings where it genuinely needs to happen. Most leaks we find are without making a mess of the property.

The Repair That Actually Holds

Once we’ve found the leak, the repair depends on what caused it. A failed compression joint is a quick fix. A pinhole in old copper might mean replacing a section of pipework. A leaking radiator valve or a leaking soldered joint needs a different fix altogether.

We carry out the repair properly, using the right materials and techniques for the type of pipework involved. Once it’s done, we’ll pressure-test, check for any other weak spots in the same run, and walk you through what we did so you know exactly what’s been fixed.

Got a leak that needs sorting? Contact our team, and we’ll come and put it right. Is it flooding your house right now? Our emergency team in Cardiff are on their way!

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Water Leak Service FAQs

I can see a damp patch on my ceiling. Is it definitely a water leak?

Not always, but probably. Damp patches can come from condensation, a roof leak, or a problem with external rendering. When the patch grows, changes shape with the use of upstairs water, or appears in dry weather, plumbing is usually the cause. We can check the most likely sources first and rule things in or out before any access work begins.

How do you find a leak without ripping up the floor?

We start with the obvious sources: visible pipework, joints under sinks and basins, radiator valves, and any fixtures the leak could be linked to. From there, we isolate sections of pipework, check water pressure, and follow the trail back to the source. Most leaks we find are without lifting any flooring. Where we do need to open up an area, we’ll always explain why before we start.

My water bill has suddenly gone up. Could it be a leak?

Possibly. A hidden leak somewhere in the system, particularly in the supply pipe between the meter and the house, will quietly waste water for months without showing any obvious signs. If the water meter is still ticking over when nothing in the house is running, you’ve almost certainly got a leak somewhere.

My boiler keeps losing pressure. Is that a leak?

It often is. A small leak somewhere in the heating system, including radiators, valves, the boiler itself, or the pipework connecting them, will cause the pressure gauge to slowly drop over days or weeks. We can find the source and repair it properly.
